Positive Aging: A Roadmap for Optimal Mental Health          Monday, November 8th, 2021 from 2-3:30pm   [$40]

The older adult population in New York State is expected to increase drastically within the next decade. This workshop will teach participants about mental health in older adults and how often overlooked factors can influence quality of life. We will discuss stigma and barriers with addressing mental health. Participants will learn how the mind-body connection and a trauma informed approach can help address mental health concerns.



Why Can’t They Just Stop? Understanding Clinical Interventions for Individuals with Substance Use Disorders & Their Families
Tuesday, November 9th, 2021 from 2-3:30pm   [$40]

This course is expected to increase knowledge and understanding of substance use treatment. Speaker will educate participants on client-centered care and evidence-based interventions that can be utilized in treatment. Speaker will also educate on strategies to engage family members into care.  Participants will be able to identify components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing and will increase skills in treating individuals suffering from addiction.



Breaking Down the Wall: Counseling Strategies & Resources For Immigrants
Monday, November 15th, 2021 from 2-3:30pm   [$40]

Many immigrant families across Long Island and beyond continue to deal with hardships since the beginning of the pandemic such as the loss of loved ones, loss of employment, a shortage of basic needs, and a spike in mental health concerns, to name a few. Some of these families face all of these same hardships with the added obstacles of discrimination, separation of families, fear of deportation, not knowing the English language, and much more. Attempts to access basic needs, employment assistance, and mental healthcare would often lead to dead ends, discouragement, and an increase in hopelessness. This presentation will discuss the community stressors and mental health concerns experienced by immigrant families, along with specific counseling strategies to address them. Resources and recommendations for additional ways to support this population will also be discussed.



 The Fourth ’F’ of Trauma: What is the Fawn Response and Why Do Clinicians Need to Know About It?

No clinical toolbox would be complete without a thorough understanding of trauma and how to effectively work from a trauma-informed perspective. While we often hear about how to provide trauma-informed care, many trainings overlook the need to observe and heal our own trauma as clinicians. Everyone has a trauma history (even the clients you don’t think do, and even us as clinicians). This training will provide an overview of the Polyvagal Theory of Trauma and trauma-informed care as well as techniques to observe and heal your own trauma responses as they occur.




Unplugging the Power Struggle Through Effective Crisis Intervention and Verbal De-Escalation Techniques

It is absolutely possible to de-escalate anyone, at any time, place, or in any situation. This workshop will identify principles that form the basic techniques effective in mastering the art and science of crisis intervention and de-escalation. Participants will learn how to establish positive interactions and rapport, avoid roadblocks while communicating with individuals in crisis, and learning how their reaction determines the effectiveness to manage the situation.

EQ is about making emotions work for you, not against you. It can be argued that emotional intelligence is the most critical skill a manager can develop to increase effectiveness. This workshop focuses on several models of EQ, and how to use it effectively in the workplace. Tips on achieving better personal and social competence are discussed.
